Opportunity
Our client, a large diabetes supply manufacturer, was hoping to investigate whether an app that accompanied their Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) product would be helpful for pregnant patients and their providers.
In addition to validating the usefulness and usability of the app and its provider-facing counterpart, the client wanted to understand overall value to help them decide whether to continue pursuing product development. This research would be used to help guide product and business decisions internally.

Methods
In-depth interviews
Task analysis
Primary Objectives
-
Learn more about the experience of patients who are pregnant and have diabetes (all types)
-
Understand whether the patient-facing app and physician-facing report are usable and useful
-
Understand how the app and report fit into the patient care process and experience
Deliverables
- Regular debrief sessions with the client following each round of research
- Research report detailing participant context and prioritized findings and recommendations on a features level
Approach
-
Conduct stakeholder interviews with client team members to ensure alignment on project goal
-
Conduct a primary round of in-depth interviews with pregnant patients with diabetes to understand their experience of care and treatment, their physician interactions, and their pain points; concept test the app design and flow to understand flow, usability, and usefulness
-
The client team then refined the prototypes and we conducted a second round of concept tests, honing in on initial pain points and updated designs
-
Conduct a round of in-depth interviews with physicians to understand the way they manage and treat pregnant patients with diabetes; run a concept test of the prototype of the physician-facing dashboard displaying CGM readouts and analysis
Client Impact
-
Deep insights into the patient experience with pregnancy and diabetes
-
Deep insights into the kinds of data and analysis physicians find most useful in managing the care and treatment of pregnant patients with diabetes
-
Actionable feedback on the prototype as it was in development, allowing the team to make design and business decisions about prioritizing the product in the future
-
Actionable next steps for future testing and areas of exploration through research
-
Following these initial rounds of research, the client team contracted with our company again to continue testing the designs that evolved from our findings.
